BACKGROUND
Founded 30 Years ago; Mr Lee started
with idea of selling Afro-Caribbean foods to his community. He
started by selling foods door to door using a beat-up old Ford
Transit van and a determination to succeed. Through his efforts, he
soon made name for himself for providing quality foods coupled with
a friendly and reliable service.
Later he branched out to include
market stalls in the towns of Luton, Bedford & Aylesbury.
Soon after, Mr Lee teamed up
with his wife to form the infamous husband and wife partnership; Mr
& Mrs Lee. It was through this partnership that the shop on Oakley
Road, Luton was acquired which was
then followed by
a second one in Bedford, run by one of
their sons. The Luton shop has been extended several times to offer
a wider variety of foods and has grown to become the largest store
of its kind in Bedfordshire, attracting many customers from all over
the region.
The ability for sourcing quality
goods combined with good customer service developed into an ethic
for Lee & Son’s and over the years, so many customers view the shop
as not just a store but also, a place to meet and mix with other
people of African Caribbean Nationalities.
By the nature of its business, Lee &
Son’s has become a significant pillar of the community, and sees the
Akeba organisation as the natural choice for sponsorship whom are
already very active in bringing about cultural awareness and
bridging the gap between different communities.
